Pykara is the name of a village and river located 19 km from Ooty in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. A boat house on the Pykara reservoir is an added attraction for tourists. Pykara boats of well protected fenced shoals. There is a restaurant and motor boats(20 minutes ride) and speed boats(10 minutes ride) are available. The Nilgiri region is renowned for its tea and most of the areas in Ooty are surrounded with the tea plantation. The boat house offers boating facilities with Paddle boats, Row boats, and Motor boats. It also features a garden, a mini train and an amusement park. Ooty lake is an artificial lake constructed by John Sullivan, in 1824.

The water flowing down mountain streams in the Ooty valley was dammed to form the lake. The lake was originally intended to be used for fishing with ferries being used to travel across the lake. It gradually shrunk from its original size giving place to the current bus stand race course, and the lake park.

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation on behalf of the Tourism Department took the possession of the lake in 1973, for providing boating facilities as a tourist attraction. The lake is surrounded by groves of Eucalyptus trees with a railway line running along one shore. During the summer season in May, boat races and boat pageantry are organized for two days.

Lamb's Rock is a view point within a reserve forest about 8 kms from the Coonoor Bus Stand. Watch a sheer precipice of several hundred meters with a phenomenal view of vast stretches of forests all the way to the Coimbatore plains. Between January and March, the trees become extremely colorful. Beneath the rock, lies a vast forest reserve. On the right, there is a Hullical ravine featuring Coonoor river. Botanical Garden Ooty

The Botanical Garden is one of the famous sightseeing spots in Ooty. This 55-hectare garden lies on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak, close to the city centre. In the 1840’s, the Marquis of Tweedale designed the initial layout of the Garden. Under the guidance of the architect, William Graham McIvor, this Garden was completed by 1848. The Raj Bhavan and a school, Hebron are located within the premises of the Garden.

Thread Garden

From the name itself you can get an idea that all plants and flowers are made of thread and it looks so realistic. Mukurthi National Park

Mukurthi National Park is a protected area. Previously it was known as "Nilgiris Tahr National Park" . It is situated on a high raised ground at Nilgiris. The park is characterised by montance grassland and shrublands. It is a home to endangered wildlife, including royal Bengal Tiger and Asian Elephant. Its main mammal attraction is the Nilgiri Tahr. Sim's Park is park-cum-botanical garden, which was laid more than a hundred years ago.the gerden is fully sorrounde by the shrubs and creepers.It was established in the year 1847. A good drive from ooty goes through the green carpet of Tea estates and the valley on the other side with settlements. The "supposed to be" Jayalalitha property" of estates is beautifully laid out. The roads in that estate is spotlessly clean as also the beautiful emerald like tea estates. The whole area is cordoned off in high-rise compound walls and gates.

The view point has an upper deck and a lower deck. One can have a lovely look of the hills and mountains, if you arelucky to have a clear day and the view was beautiful. Kotagiri itself is a lovely and unspoilt landscape and hence there are lot of places from where one can have a great view of the valley and greenery.

There are no hotels or restaurants there at the view point. Have a few tea shops nearby. Both the upper deck and the lower deck has only stairs and wheel chairs cannot be manouvered.

Mudumalai National Park

Mudumalai National Park also a declared Tiger Reserve is the first wildlife sanctuary in southern India. It was established in the year 1940 and it covers about 60 kilometers. Now the area is extended upto 321 kilometers. Gray langur and the bonnet macaque are both living in the park. But you can also see fauna such as tigers, leopards, striped hyenas, dholes, sloth bears, Asian elephants, and Golden Jackals. It is also home to different species of birds.Crested hawk-eagle, the crested serpent eagle, the Malabar Trojan, and the Malabar grey hornbill are some of them. The Moyar River and Nilgiri River flow through the reserve.The sanctuary received its name from the word ‘Mudumalai’ which means ‘situated on the first hill’. The St. Catherine Falls near Aravenu is considered to be a two step waterfall which comes down from a height of 76 metres. This water fall has both lower and upper falls. The upper fall is the second highest in the region and is known to take a leap of about 250 feet.

Catherine Falls is a double-cascaded waterfall located in Kotagiri, The Nilgiris District, Tamil nadu and it is also a major tourist spot in Kotagiri. It is on the Mettupalayam road branching off at Aravenu. The upper fall drops to the floor, and is the second highest in the mountains. The waters from the upper stream of the Kallar River are crossed by the invisible Mettupalayam-Ooty road beyond the mountains in the south-west.

The height of waterfalls is about 250 ft. Catherine Falls is named after the wife of M.D. Cockburn, believed to have introduced the coffee plantation to Kotagiri. The native name of the Catherine Falls is Geddhehaada Halla, meaning "Foothills Dale River". It can clearly been seen from the top of Dolphin's Nose if seeing the entire waterfall as one total impression is what you are looking for. It is also possible to take a road to the top of the falls. If you need to stay overnight, cottages are available very close to Catherine Falls at Catherine Greens.

Apart from the St. Catherine Water Falls, tourists can visit the nearby Uyilatty Falls or Elk Falls, which is around 8 km from Kotagiri. Moreover, Kotagiri is home to the Rangaswamy Peak, which is around 1785 metres high. This biconical peak is a sacred hill among the residents of Nilgiri. It is believed that Lord Rangaswamy, who lived in Karamadai in Coimbatore, came here after a quarrel with his wife.

Radio Astronomy Center Ooty

Radio Astronomy is located in Muthorai near Ooty. The Radio Astronomy Centre (RAC) is part of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) of the well-known Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) which is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Atomic Energy. The Ooty Radio Astronomy is a 530-metre (1,740 ft) long and 30-metre (98 ft) wide Cylindrical Paraboloid telescope. Ralliah dam is located close to the Wellington road, which is around 9km from Coonoor. Most of the people are not aware of this place. It's hidden in the forest, from parking area you need to trek 1 km to reach that dam since there is no proper road for vehicles. The dam and surrounded area will provide you an astonishing view. You can spot out Bisons or Malabar squirrels in this place. Best time to visit is Monsoon season.

Long wood shola is one of the tourist spots in Kotagiri. It's a dense forest that extends to an area of 116 hectares.one of the picturesque forest area with the trekking path. It is just 3km from Kotagiri. You need to trek 2.5 km into the beautiful shola forest.A long wood shola is a place for the habitat of the Indian Bisons and Indian Flying-fox. You can also find plenty of Guars and Malabar squirrels in this area.

Kandal Cross Church

Kandal Cross Church is located about 9,080 feet above sea level in Ooty. Some think this church as the Jerusalem of the East. The church has a little-known memorial that is connected with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Inside a life-sized bronze, crucifix contains a small sized relic that is encapsulated in a glass case. The relic inside the glass is a tiny dark coloured wood from the original Cross that Christ carried upon which he was finally crucified. Even many who come to this church are said to be unaware of this fact with the exception of few who pray in front of this memorial.

Chocolate Museum

The museum contains the models describing the preparation of chocolates. Everyone will be given with wafer stick dipped in molten chocolate at the end. Varieties of chocolates are being exhibited and sold here

Union Church

The Union Church was constructed in the 19th Century and resembles a ancient colonial architecture of design that marks it as a startling, majestic and beautiful site in Ooty.

The Union Church is considered as one of the foremost religious as well as tourist spots in Ooty that should not be missed. Being one of the oldest churches in the Nilgiris District, the Union Church draw a huge crowd of tourists every year who visit and offer prayers for wishes to be fulfilled.

It is often known that these ancient Churches in Ooty marked the arrival of Christianity and henceforth the punishment and causes of a large religious infiltration that took place during the colonial era in Ooty. The pious needs of people who willingly walked into the Christianity faith forced many churches to crop up in Ooty among the 18th and 20th Century counting the Union Church that serves as a platform of worship for the numerous religious believers residing in Ooty.

Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church is one of the oldest churches in Ooty. The Holy Trinity Church has been rightly prominent as one of the most famous and oldest landmarks of Ooty that stands quietly yet formidably on the Summer House Road in Ooty.
The Holy Trinity Church represent a Tudor appearance and is indicated by tarnished stained glass windows, cryptic carvings and peaceful cemetery. This Church gained its identification in 1858 during which it became a faithful and stanch Church and a temporary Holy abode serving the spiritual needs of the congregation.
This church obtains its identification way back in the year 1858 and since then it has been a place of holy sojourn. Earlier the church was used for prayer only on Sundays. The famous Tamil scholar and translator, George Uglao Pope, is known to have been a part of this church since its beginning. One can even find few of his work serving as Chaplain during the years 1958 and 1959. At present worshippers of 700 families are connected with this holy abode. If you are preparing a visit to Ooty, then visiting the Holy Trinity Church is an inevitable option.

Sacred Heart Church

Sacred Heart Church was built in 1897 by Rev. Fr. Foubert. After the First World War Rev. Fr. Belylsi built the bell towers. When Ootacamund was raised to a separate jurisdiction in its own power on 03-07-1955 Sacred Heart Church became the diocesan Catholic. During the time of Rev. Fr. Ambrose, in 1987 while rebuilding the roofs of the Cathedral which were in an old condition, the roof of the sanctuary gave in and came falling down. Because of this mishap, it underwent a major renovation in 1989 and the celebration of the renovated Cathedral took place on July 7th, 1989.
