Boating in Ooty lake has been cancelled due to the sewage water flows into Ooty Lake
The water in the Ooty Lake have turned black due to waste water which comes from Hotel mixed with the Lake
water. Boating and other activities in the new Honeymoon lake has been cancelled on Wednesday.
A month before ,the drainage pipe of a private hotels are sealed to prevent it from joining to the lake. An inspection conducted yesterday found that the seal was broken,said the official.
Boat rides also cancelled at the lake by considering the health Risks of the public.The lake has ten pedal boats
and three motor boats.The thorough inspection in nearby buildings today(10th September) will reveal who are the culprits. Boating will remain cancelled in the new lake till the problem is solved, said the official.
The Ooty Lake committee which is headed by the district collector consits of officials from the Ooty municipality and tourism department. The sub-commitee consists officials from the pollution control board, TNEB, tourism department, PWD and the Ooty municipality. The Ooty municipality and the PWD are in control of maintaing the ooty lake.
Environmental activist says that lake officials took timely action when a complaint is reported on this, butthe municipality who is in responsible for the maintenance of the lake, shows a lethargic attitude.
However, K Sathyabhama, Ooty Municipal chairperson, told TOI, " The hotels and cottages which is near to the lake has received the issued notices from the Ooty Municipality which is in association with PWD for open drainages. She also added that in the past we sealed a few of open drainage systems found in the building close to the lake. We have also instructed the hoteliers there to install recycling plants on their environment.
