Botanical Garden Ooty

The Botanical Garden is one of the famous sightseeing spots in Ooty. This 55-hectare garden lies on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak, close to the city centre. In the 1840’s, the Marquis of Tweedale designed the initial layout of the Garden. Under the guidance of the architect, William Graham McIvor, this Garden was completed by 1848. The Raj Bhavan and a school, Hebron are located within the premises of the Garden.

 

Layout of the Botanical Garden

This garden has a terraced layout and is divided into 5 sections:

  1. Lower Garden – It includes the entrance, lawn and fern house

  2. New Garden – This region includes the rose garden, terraced flower beds, natural ponds and carpeted emblems of the state and nation

  3. Italian Garden – Features informal garden laid out in the Italian style

  4. Conservatory – It has various flowering plants and a bog for marsh plants

  5. Nurseries – Has 8 glass houses and terraces where plants are cultivated

#1 How to reach the Botanical Garden?

The Garden is located at the centre of the city, so accessibility is easy. If you are travelling in your own vehicle, you can park your vehicle in a nearby parking lot and walk to the Garden. Do note that during tourist season, roads may be blocked for vehicles, so you may have to walk a little. But, the sides of the roads have plenty of shops that you can browse or buy as you walk towards the Garden.

#2 How much time does one usually spend in the Botanical Gardens?

The Botanical Garden in Ooty is huge and spread across 55 hectares. If you just want to look at all the flowers and walk around the garden, you will need a minimum of 2 hours. However, if you want to photograph or have fun with kids in the lawn, then you will need more than 2 hours.

The Botanical Garden is located right at the heart of the city. So, there are numerous restaurants around. A few of the popular restaurants in the vicinity are Adyar Ananda Bhavan, Melting Pot, Hyderabad Biriyani House and Ponmari Multi Cuisine Restaurant

#4 Are there any shops inside the Botanical Garden?

There is a shop inside where you can buy Niligiris products such as spices, oils, honey and more. Another shop sells ornaments and handmade items made by the native tribe, Todas. The Garden also has a canteen where you can get basic food items, snacks, ice cream and such.

#5 Is there a nursery in the Garden?

Yes, there is a nursery where you can buy saplings and cuttings. However, you may not get flower seeds here.

#6 Is the Botanical Garden good place for an educational trip?

Yes, students can learn a lot about different species of plants and trees from various parts of the country and the world. However, there is no guide and students need to read the information on boards placed near the trees and plants.

#7 Are there any restricted items that one should not carry into the Garden?

The Botanical Garden is tobacco- and alcohol free zone. So, visitors are advised not to carry tobacco, smoking items or alcohol inside.  Plus, it is a plastic-free zone. So, you should not carry plastic bags or covers inside

#8 Is photography and videography allowed inside the garden?

Yes, you can take photos and videos. But you should buy the relevant tickets before you enter the Garden.
